A couple of Sundays ago, my wife & I went to the last ever Delirious gig, at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. For those of you not in the know, Delirious (or Delirious? as is their official title) are a totally awesome Christian Rock ban who have been around since the early 90's.
Some people think that being a Christian isn't fun - that it's all a list of rules and regulations to follow and that you can't be yourself or things like that. Well that's not true - following Christ lets you be more like the humans we were designed to be in the first place - but in terms of "Christian Rock" I was thinking, theoretically it's better than normal rock music. This is because what we are singing about is even more important, deep and meaningful than secular songs. Sure, singing about love and heartbreak is meaningful, but, write some words about how big and great our God is, put it to some good music, and bang! You've got yourself a song that should stir the heart of any Christian, especially at a live concert like the one on Sunday.
As for the gig itself then - it was a wonderful, loud evening of praise and fun... it's just SUCH an experience to be in a packed auditorium of over 5,000 people (sold out a few months ago), all singing in praise to our God who has done so much of us, and to be honest, in thanks of the many great songs that Delirious have written for us over the years. A down side was not getting in until 7:40pm (gig started at 7pm!) - partly due to us being 10 minutes late but mostly due to the HUGE queue - found out later that they were late letting people in (allegedly 6pm but it didn't turn out that way). We got in with only 2 songs left of their "Cutting Edge" sequence of songs - before they became a full-time band called "Delirious?" they were known as the Cutting Edge Band you see. This was sad but we did get some 15 songs in when they came back on, and the break let us get into a better position rather than squeezed in at the back of the hall.
The rest of the gig was just amazing. The buzz, the worship, the noise... it was the best of the world of rock'n'roll merged with the joy that being a Christian brings into your life. "My Glorious" is one of my favourite Delirious tracks now, "Deeper" is probably still my number one though. Just typing up about it takes me back to the concert...
