Things to do in Oxford
Unfortunately we can't invite all of you to the afternoon reception/evening ceilidh. So to try and make up for it, we've made this page of things for you to do in Oxford instead. Oxford is a very historical/cultural kind of town, (here's a list of famous people who have lived or studied here) with something for everyone. You could just visit the Official Oxford Tourism website to find some things to do, or why not look at the list of our personal favourites below? All the places listed are within 15 minutes' walk of the church.
Copies of the below information and the VERY USEFUL MAP will be available after the wedding at the back of the church.
Click on the headings to display the information.
Places for snacks
- G&D's make very very nice ice-cream, and also many other snacks & drinks. A bit expensive though, but then, most things in Oxford are. Handily located at the end of Pembroke Street, 2 minutes' walk from the church, past the reception venue.
- Ben's Cookies make very very nice cookies! Again a bit expensive, but buy one at least - they're delicious! Located in The Covered Market.
- The Nosebag is a nice small restaurant/snack venue, on St. Michael's Street.
- If you want a proper meal, there are many many restuarants on George Street, ranging from Pizza Hut to places like Cafe Uno, Bella Italia, Old Orleans and many others besides.
Colleges
- Christ Church college is the biggest, and perhaps most famous college in Oxford. Parts of it, including the hall, have been used in the Harry Potter movies.
- Magdalen college (pronounced Maud-len) is another big one, it even has its own Deer Park!
- Most colleges will accept visitors to some degree, mostly for free. There's a few nice old ones on Turl Street. You could even visit Wadham College (Benjamin's old college) or St John's College (Rebecca's old college).
Parks/walks
Museums
- The Ashmolean museum of art & archaelogy is Britain's oldest public museum, and is one of Oxford's most popular museums. Admission free.
- The University Museum of Natural History has lots of nice stuffed extinct animals, dinosaurs, etc. Also houses the lecture theatre Rebecca & I attended in first year - the first ever public demonstration of radio happened here. Admission free.
Shops
- Cornmarket Street is the main shopping street in Oxford; many nationwide retailers are found here.
- The Covered Market has a wide range of shops, and as with most things in Oxford, can trace its history back very far indeed. Accessible from High Street.
- Boswells is an independent department store that sells a very wide range of items, from luggage to toys to electrical goods to gifts. It's also a previous employer of Benjamin. Try asking in the gift department for him!
Towers/views
- Carfax Tower gives good views of central Oxford, and is only about 3 minutes' walk from the church.
- The University church has great views too, and may even be higher.
Tours of Oxford
- The nearest stop of the The Oxford Tour bus is at the end of Pembroke Street. Ticekts £9 for the day, hop on & off as much as you wish.
- There are many walking Tours offered from Broad Street, or Carfax (corner of Queen Street & Cornmarket Street).
Christian History
- Many historical things in Christianity happened in Oxford, especially the Reformation. On Broad Street you can see a cross on the road to mark where some of the Reformists were burnt alive for standing up for what they believed in.
- Also, the Martyr's Memorial was built in memory of these people. Found at the end of Magdalen Street/St Giles.
- On New Inn Hall Street, there is a plaque on the wall on the right side, noting the building where John Wesley preached for the first time.
Other things
- Punting is a very Oxford thing to do. If you're too trepidacious to try punting yourself, you can pay a bit more and have a professional punt for you, whilst you sit back and enjoy the scenery. Punts in Oxford are found by Magdalen Bridge, at the end of High Street, a 15 minute walk from the church. Prices... £12 an hour, or £20 per half hour chauffeured. Also a £30 cash deposit is required, plus a form of identification.
- The Oxford Story it's a very touristy kind of place that takes you through the history of Oxford in an entertaining fashion. Entry £7.25 adults.
